A.J. Foyt was another multitalented driver, starting on dirt ovals in front engined Indy cars, making some succesful NASCAR appearances and co-driving the 67 LeMans winner with Dan Gurney.
One of the great places to have been must have been the Nassau Speed Weeks where top drivers from both sides of the Atlantic would race sports cars on a street circuit and then party with each other.
I think the car Clark is sitting on is an early Lotus 25 which was the succesful marriage of a monocouque tub (replacing a tube space frame) and the Ford V8.

That is just a lovely form. I have no idea what a pig it would be to drive, but those huge wheels scream "unsprung weight". God that's lovely, though...

You make an excellent point. The zaftig and hefty, voracious fenders may be gone, as well as the sheer weight and thickness of metal-everything, but Rolls Royce, Bugatti, and Bentley sure have sustained a sense of style and purpose. Good call, Wayne!

Yeah, what was the point of plus-fours anyway? Just a silly fashion thing, or was there some functional purpose...keep your trouser cuffs dry while wading through the rough searching for your ball on hole number twelve? I have a picture somewhere of my grandfather wearing them back in the Thirties, and he was no sportsman...too bad I can't ask him.

That look was all about image. I believe the point was to project an air of devil-may-care and to appear athletic (though preferably not a sweaty sportsman,) with a youthful persona, which IMO, certainly was underscored by driving - and being able to afford - a car like that Bugatti, or a Duesenberg (the origin of saying something was a "doozey"), or a Packard, or Pierce Arrow, or Cord, all big, important image projectors for the time. The "look" also spoken of - screamed - money, worn by somebody who had the time and income to afford to play, not just report daily for a 8-10hr. laborer's job, wearing well-worn and far less perky clothing (ensemble).

I have been reading that wheel weight really absorbes horsepower. Especally bad on small motor cars like performance Honda's.

Hey Sarge,
I was googling "historic homes of Baltimore County" and guess what turned up:
The house in the background is the gatehouse for an old estate on Falls Road a couple miles up from the intersection at Shawan. I wonder if the guy lives there. High roller if he does... I'll give the old boy credit for omitting the chromed wire-spoked rims...love those perforated disc wheels!

Somehow a flatface Morgan in that kind of shape, it doesn't surprise me if the digs were a bit palatial...
I still don't care for the bonnet treatment, but what the hey...
And, I have to agree (rather violently) with Rex. That lovely Bugatti isn't visually well-served by its successor; a Veyron isn't meant to be good looking and it fills that requirement quite nicely. It's hideous, and reminds me instantly of Edvard Munch's "The Scream". After gazing at the lovely image previous, to be shown a Veyron that soon after had me searching frantically for a shrimp skewer to put my eyes out.
That's what happens when the French are forced to build what the Germans tell them to build; sort of a Vichy Bugatti.
