Hiring freeze. I was to be rehired part time and since I can't be, I stay on full time. And, boys & girls is how a hiring freeze saves money.

Perhaps the hiring freeze is temporary, like unto the next fiscal year?
When I was ready to (almost) retire, I had two choices: a) to convert from full time to part time @<20 hr/week(no bennies) or b) go to work for a body shop and be contracted out as a "consultant" (again no bennies but contract hourly rate was sweet). Either of these an option?

Assuming you stay on no one is hired to replace you so money is saved
but you still get your old salary [?] but if you work part-time it would
be for less pay but then someone would be needed full-time to
replace you. However, IMHO, someone with your experience and
background are hard to replace. Has someone been working with you in
preparation for this change?

Everything is temporary if you wait long enough. No one really knows the real endpoint of it and there's no real clarity on what can be done at all so nothing gets done. Paralytic. We're not even processing the summer interns so this is screwing over the youngest generation of scientists

(a) was very close to what I had planned - but it requires an actual separation and rehire - a flip of the switch free-flow operation is not possible.
(b) has a lot of drawbacks, but still can't be done under a freeze.

OTOH, the VA bypassed the freeze by declaring every job position a public safety Nat'l security job...

Sure. But I have multiple other connections and duties beyond my primary one and those were what I was going to handle through a part-time position.

There is and will be no replacement - they are already celebrating my retirement so that my budget and space can be divvied up and handed out -- vultures wander the halls with clipboards making plans.

I'll just stay on until I get forced out (that actually can happen in 2018....), or I just decide to stop.

I do get to derive some entertainment value in tormenting the vultures by sitting tight.

Probably will - retire, become an alcoholic, play the lottery, sit with the rest of the pensioners down at the store by the stove, smell bad, frighten the children, and eventually be found frozen by the side of the road in a puddle.

And that's just the 1st day of retirement.
