She knew how to keep you in line. Just a glance at the snake and the scorpion.

Guess we now know why Wayne's house is never bothered by
thieves breaking in...if the rattlesnake won't get them, the scorpion will!
Take care,

Having read Doyle's "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" numerous times, I don't think I could live with a woman that keeps a rattlesnake.

My wife's was a Mojave rattle snake. It was quite tame from being handled all the time. She did ask me to feed it for her after my gopher snake tried to strike a mouse I was about to drop in its cage and bit my hand instead. She said a rattle snake bite can be bad, so I could feed both snakes. She was a nurse and had taken care of patients who had been bitten.

Common symptoms include swelling, severe pain, tingling, weakness, anxiety, nausea and vomiting, hemorrhaging, perspiration, and eventually heart failure. Local pain following envenomation is often intense, increasing with the ensuing edema. My wife had one patient whom the doctors had sliced open the the swollen area to relieve pain from the pressure.

The hospital she worked at kept rattle snake anti-venom so she was not worried about being bitten. It never happened so we never got to test how well anti-venom works.

Once she called me at work. Could not wait to tell me about the salesman who had knocked on the door. He wanted to know what that rattling sound was. She told him, "It is a rattlesnake." He asked with alarm, "Where?" She replied, "Right here at the door." My wife couldn't wait till I got home to tell me, "He left so fast, he forgot to tell me what he was selling."

My wife said she felt quit safe with the rattlesnake in the house. She told me, if we ever had a home envasion, she was turning the snakes loose.

Wayne,

Is that your snake bite?
I would probably scream and yell and say bad words.

Round his brow he had
a peculiar yellow band, with brownish speckles,
which seemed to be bound tightly round his head.
As we entered he made neither sound nor motion.
“The band! the speckled band!” whispered
Holmes.
I took a step forward. In an instant his strange
headgear began to move, and there reared itself
from among his hair the squat diamond-shaped
head and puffed neck of a loathsome serpent.
“It is a swamp adder!” cried Holmes; “the deadliest
snake in India. He has died within ten seconds
of being bitten. Violence does, in truth, recoil upon
the violent, and the schemer falls into the pit which
he digs for another.

Takes two hours to die from a Mojave Rattlesnake bite. Plenty of time to get to the hospital for anti-venom shot.

No. I have been bit, stung and skewered by almost everything in the Sonoran Desert, but never a rattle snake.
I think I would rather be bitten by a rattle snake than fall face first into an 800 pound prickly pear cactus.
I looked like I had grown a cactus spine beard.

And how do I know it weighed 800 pounds?

Because I weighed my truck on the city dump scales going in with the cactus and going out without it.

And I can tell you from personal experience that having the OTHER end meet
a cactus isn't a very pleasant either...doing THAT one time was all it took!
Hurt more to have the barbed spines removed than when I sat down on them
as a kid in Santa Barbara, CA.

Wolf!

Were you just testing what it would be like, or was it an accident?

Mine was an accident. A rock rolled under my foot and tossed me head first into the cactus.

Not possible, they are everywhere and the bicycle paths go through cactus forests. Worse yet, some species of cactus seem to jump at anyone who gets too close.

Title: Ouch! Jumping Cactus Attack!
https://youtu.be/Lfv1QfOtDhA
This one did not jump, dummy stuck his hand into it.

At the end of video he catches a collard lizard when it attaches itself to his finger. I have caught lizards and snakes the same way.

Even a rattle snake surprised me once by jumping twice its body length. Before I saw it jump, I thought the strike was limited to their body length.

NOTE--The following two images belong to someone else. I "borrowed" them to show identical things I have experienced.

Then the tire throws the cactus pad into your leg or butt.

Here the pads suddenly appeared on my ankle and shoe. I don't remember getting close to the cactus that threw them.
