I don't think you'd think of Connecticut as a tobacco producer either, but you can buy cigars made with tobacco from the Dominican Republic with a Connecticut wrapper. It's milder and more aromatic. Also, there's many tobacco fields along the coast of Lake Erie in Canada, from the Windsor side up to about around Nanticoke. Who knew?

In the past Connecticut was famous for a certain type of tobacco. Brightleaf?
The Ohio Valley was also a large tobacco growing area into the 20th century.
Wheeling, WV had at least two tobacco factories, Mail Pouch chewing tobacco and Marsh Wheeling cigars.
There were other brand names.
Tobacco was being grown in southern Ohio into at least the 1960s.
Most tobacco production in the US ended with the withdrawing of federal support.
Tobacco was one of the important crops in south Georgia when I came here in 1975.
I see no tobacco fields or auction/warehouses now.

Yes, Roger, and I remember truckin' all over Kentucky in the '70s and early '80s, and it seemed like every other little farm had a tobacco drying barn, and some larger farms had them too, but it wasn't their main crop.

Hard to find tobacco in Kentucky now. Same situation as in Georgia.

I lived next to a tobacco farm in Suffield, Connecticut about 1960. The tobacco was grown under a cloth awning that covered the entire field. The Puerto Rican workers were shipped in and out daily in locked chain link enclosures on the backs of trucks.

Those springs must be pretty bad stuff if the looks on the faces of those men is any indication.

I always thought growing tobacco was a southern thing, thinking it would be too cold up "nawth". But years ago I traveled up to West Simsbury CT to see my (ex) wife's uncle and saw fields of covered tobacco.

That last photo of the 3 men standing by the stones...I wonder if what they're wearing are work clothes? Must be, 2 of the guys appear to be wearing gloves. Buttoning only the top button must have been the thing back then :)

Yes, that top button thing is often seen in photos from around this time period.
If a jacket has more than one button the bottom one will often not be buttoned,
sometimes the top will be unbuttoned. I have seen with four button jackets with
the top and bottom open. Seems to be a fad style thing.

Perhaps they were disturbed by the suits mid job to pose for a damn pitcher and just want to take their coats back off and get the job done by knockoff.

Rufus,

It might be interesting if you did a modern comparison shot next time you get up to Chambersburg.
