Nick Charles, Tramp. Cemented William Powell in my teen-aged brain watching those late night movies. Dashiell Hammett's detective solved all of those cases with his wife Nora and that damned fox terrier nipping at his heels, shortly after or while downing a bucket of gin and burning through a carton of cigarettes...he was da' man.

There's been some other good ones besides the ones Tramp mentioned. I loved the Mike Hammer stories that Spillane cranked out. (I read about 5 of them (along with about 20 Louis Lamour westerns) while convalescing in the Navy Hospital at Gitmo). And what about Ellery Queen's mysteries. Read 'em, but can't recall the star of the novel now, but I think he lived on a 40' houseboat called the Busted Flush, which he won in a poker game. And the other guy, the fat man who lived in a Brownstone in New York City growing orchids , and he never left it. His investigator, Archie, did all the leg work.

Todays television just sucks. That's why whenever I watch, it's usually something 30 years old or older.

Enjoyed every word, and yes. Of the classic detectives, Marple is to be feared. Of the current crop (beyond such tripe as CSI, NCIS, and all the other sillyness where the use of initials in the title should be ones first clue; too lazy to spell out the words means the plot is probably too lazy as well) I'd fear only (and the nominations are open) DCI Christopher Foyle. I enjoy thinking my way through "Foyle's War" though I do find "Sam" (Honeysuckle Weeks) rather annoying for some reason; perhaps she's too dam wholesome. Foyle, however, has the classic analytical cool down to a very fine hone.

As for cop shows, my fondest memories are for something most here haven't heard of. I will always remember looking forward to "Dixon of Dock Green" each week. Sort of in the vein of "Dragnet" in the States, PC Dixon was a solid regular ol' bobby who showed more of the real unexciting up-front copper than wild chases, sort of a character/plot development over special effects thing. I'm sure Dixon in his calm capability would be far too tame now, but that might be the reason for a bit of nostalgia. There was a comfort in that tameness...

Close. It was Asta. It's an answer on a lot of daily crosswords for some reason.

Been eatin' at me for a couple of hours now, and two of those names came to me. Travis Magee was the dude who owned the Busted Flush. Nero Wolf was the fat man in N.Y., and I think the Ellery Queen mysteries were written by a guy who's first name was Rex, but damned if I recall his last name.

A pretty fair modern series is Michael Connelly's "Harry Bosch" novels.

For a multi-novel author with no recurring characters try John Katzenbach.

A lot of good stories and detectives mentioned but I thought Tramp was really writing about
ones that you would NOT like to deal with, that could look at you and you knew that they knew the truth.

Mmmf, I learned something today; Poirot was Belgian, I had always thought that he was French. That just shows how much attention that I payed to the story.
