If I remember correctly,this country,the USA,is a republic,not a democracy.I think we forget that and what it means.

I still believe that everyone can and should have their own opinions and have the right to express those opinions.

I'm not sure that what I believe is of any consequence because of changing interpretations over the years of our country.

One thing that has not changed yet----We can "play" with our trains the way we want and have FUN.

Depth perception is achieved by means of:

o Accommodation: This means, "focus". Depth perception by focus works with one eye or two eyes.

o Stereopsis: This means that the object appears slightly different to each eye because of the two eye's different positions on the head.

o Vergence: This means the eye aims at a point on the object.

o Cyclopean image: When both eyes converge at one point on the object the two images produced by two eyes fuse into a single cyclopean image.

o Utrocular discrimination: This means you can tell to which eye a monocular stimulus is received.

To create a 3-D image on film two cameras (or one camera with two lenses) take(s) two images on film. At this point the images possess Stereopsis, i.e. one appears slightly different than the other. If the two images were projected onto a screen, both eyes would see both images and it would look quite confusing. So... the left image is projected through a polaroid filter that is rotated 90 degrees from the filter on the right image projector. Now when you look at the projected images, they still look confusing. Put your
3-D polaroid glasses on.



Now the left eye only sees the left image and the right eye only sees the right image. In order to see the right image, which appears on the left side of the screen, and the left image that appears on the right side of the screen, Ultrocular discrimination causes you to cross your eyes until the left and right images converge. Your Accommodation is at the screen, but Stereopsis, Vergence and Cyclopean image all trick your brain into thinking that the image is in front of the screen. (Images can also appear deep into the screen if the images are separated near your interocular distance.) On a wide screen like IMax the image can be so close that you might think that you can touch it. (You can see your hand pass through the image like it is a ghost.)

If you try this at home, your wall or projection screen will depolarize the images. It takes a special screen that reflects the images with the polarization intact.

I am curious Pete, did you see the movies on a flat IMax screen or one of the new domed I-Max screens?

Wayne, that was fascinating!

Yes. the screen was curved, but what I didn't notice was whether it was spherical, ie, also curved from top to bottom.

I should mention, to anyone with very young kids, that "A Christmas Carol" could be a frightening experience, both because it has scary images, (it is, after all, a ghost story), and because things 'jump out' at the viewer.
My kids ate it up, the youngest being 10, and I think Jon Jr. would be OK, but just something to bear in mind.

My oldest son Evan, in middle school, has just been selected for his second 'Outstanding Student' award, chosen not just for academics, but also by being noticed by staff for his respectful attitude toward teachers and administrators, and for being considerate toward, and helpful to, his fellow students. He also won in elementary school.

I love my kids desperately, totally, and unconditionally, and then they go and do stuff like this, and make me even prouder!
