Re: Got wood?
Fabulous, rising to the level of sculpture, IMHO .
Re: Got wood?
My contractor buddy Larry stopped by with 900$ worth of sapele and asked me if I’d make him some doors. I said sure Larry doors rhymes with floors why not.

I made a jig with a flush trim bit to do the lions share of cutting the mortises.

I hate plunge routers. D handle will do the trick

A little scoring with a razor knife for the cleaning up the mortises.

Clean up with chisels done

Running the tenons on the table saw

Who wouldn’t mis the opportunity to dust of their Lie Nielsen shoulder plane

A tenon and mortise tester

The bottom part of the doors receive a panel. A dado head made quick work of this.

Ready for test assembly and final measurement of the top center stile.

Annie stopped by to help but wasn’t much help and fell asleep

Glue up in the for ground
One completed in the back ground. Yes they are painting sapele mahogany.
I sanded and primed all my joints to be sure nothing moved. These doors are approx 2” thick by 8’ by 5’ wide

Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking.

Isn't Sapele kind of a mahogany look-alike with a slightly finer texture than Honduras Mahogany,
At one time when I was doing some custom aircraft interiors I was using Pau Ferro instead of Rosewood. Then the fun began, It had to match the Formica that was used. In order to do that I had to bleach the Pau Ferro then figure out how to stain it.

Made a set of front doors for a guy. Man what a nightmare. Everything was beautiful. Right up to the point he brought us some walnut stain and clear polyurethane. Never again. 12 months later. Everything turned to sh&t. His doors faced full sun and all kinds of weather. Everything blistered and the doors twisted. If you sat on this guy's front steps for 10 minutes ,during the day you would be sunburnt. That sun beat down on those dark stained doors for a year. Ruined them quick He fought us for a while trying to get his money back. I know the person that did his second set. They made him build a little porch roof over his entrance.
I spend entirely too many hours a day tying my shoes

At that point taking out all of the Formica might have jumped to the top of the list of options.

I believe you are right although I am not well steeped in the family of mahogany woods. Nice to work with though. Most of my moderately sharp tools did well with a little honing from time to time.

Oh Man! Most people just don’t understand certain woods just shouldn’t be used on the exterior period. Sun will quickly bleach out walnut and the heat is another story. Even Ipe’ will gray out pretty quickly. Lots of maintence if you want something outside to look like your China cabinet

It's called folk art and was probably made by someone who thought making this would be important to his religious beliefs.
