Regarding the US Airways A320 landing in Hudson River:
CNN showed water landing instruction in a trainer. "Land just like landing on a runway except 'land gear up.'"
Based on eyewitness reports, Sully did not follow those instructions. He kept the engines out of the water so long that the tail of the A320 was dragging in the water when it finally settled into the river.
Sully's landing reminds me of my own glider training for landing in rough terrain (like a field of boulders.) "Fly three feet above the terrain until it stalls and falls into the terrain. You want to be going as slow as possible."
I am not surprised that he did exactly that (avoid landing until the plane fell into the water) his pilot's license includes a glider rating.
