It apparently hasn't changed since I left that area @40 years ago.
A beautiful and enchanting place.

I would go to the gorge and sit on the edge to watch STUFF of all kinds, birds, bees, animals of many types. Never spent the night there but at that time it was possible to do that. It seemed that I could see some of the plants grow. There were trails along the top and in the gorge. There was an area where
college students [mostly] would jump from the edge into the water in the gorge. I understand that access has been made easier but the area is more controlled now. I read some time ago that there had been some vandalism in the area. It is now a state park.

Antioch College is just down stream and has always been a factor in this area. It is in Yellow Springs, yes there are yellow springs here, which is on the edge of John Bryan State Park. Springfield and Dayton are not far away. IMO this is a great place/area to visit more than once.

You were right about the gorge being a place I visited while at college in the area. It was a bicycle ride (later, a motor-scooter jaunt) away only.

I don't know whether this fits your suggestion of my having "wild" times there, but you may be right (!) You see, we used to go to the top of the highest part of the cliff, edge our way out along a dead tree stump/log, which was still anchored in the soil, that reached out far over the narrow opening of the gorge, mincing our way sideways, bit by bit, balancing ourselves with only our guts( not the kind of gut I have nowadays, I can assure you!) until we got far enough out on it to be able to see the TOPS of trees below; then, we'd edge-out farther, until the deep, dark water of the stream enticed us from below.

That would be the moment we would hurl ourselves out over the treetops and down into the water, trusting out aim was accurate.

Had we ever checked beforehand if the stream were deep enough to absorb our feet-first fall into it? Nope. Too much work. We figured, whatthehell, Yahhhooooooo!and jumped.

The difficult part was the climb up the gorge's cliff-side. Oh, we had the muscle, balance, and gumption for it, and made the jump and climb more than once per pilgrimage there, but it was the ferocious, pesky, unrelenting quarter-size horseflies that bit us all the way back to the top - no small climb, I assure you. No tools for that climb; just fingernails and strong fingers. And curses for thosedam flies.

You are right, Roger, it was a beautiful, beguiling place, which seemed like no other I had ever visited. Antioch College itself was a place of pilgrimage for us, too, so I often "monitored" classes there, feeling something fresh and different was being added to my more formal, traditional college experience.

If I could repeat any time in my whole life, it would be the time I attended college in Ohio and hurled myself off a cliff at Yellow Springs.

Even the curb is a hotmess. Wasn't anything new back then? I should have thought that a place with brick sidewalks would have had curbs as a new thing and , therefore, tidy and strong. I guess my perspective is way off on the what-and-when of that circa stuff, huh.

I see three trees broken off where the curb is messed up, I wonder if something happened there sometime before the picture was taken? Note that the curb further away and on the other side of the street appear to be in better shape.

They landed the mothership in the vacant lot next to the school and the gravitational field disrupted the curb alignment and broke off the trees......
