Good catch, Roger, I missed that detail entirely.

Yeah, but I missed the trolley. Probably in more than one way.

If you go back a few pages to when I was posting other cards of this bridge, and the Park, you would note the trolley line being present........now if I could just find a really good photo of just the trolley!

As pastoral as everything looks in pictures such as that station setting, I am reminded of the crude restroom facilities at that time, and of the lack of air conditioning for folks in all that wool fabric, to mention just a few inconveniences. They all appear to be peaceful and content, but how uncomfortable were they actually, one can wonder. :|

Yet today the materials for clothing are much more wearable and the style today seems to be wear whatever you want whenever you want.
But so many people do NOT seem to be peaceful and content.
We, the general populace, are also supposed to be more educated today.
I think some of the PHD guys are really living up to their names. Not all PHDs suffer from the same thing.
Some understood what was happening and were able to avoid stepping in it.

In my youth all we had at what is now my place in PA was a 2 stall outhouse a good distance away from the building so that on a cold or wet or snowy night, one thought hard about making that trip.

Indoor plumbing is hard to do without once available.

I did not have air conditioning until I was in grad school in the 80's.......

...how uncomfortable were they actually, one can wonder. :|

I have yet to come across anybody that remembers these, including my wife, but I recall Rest Stops, decades ago, on interstate highways being rather rough-hewn affairs, complete with boards with holes for fannies, wooden floors, and rudimentary stalls. Am I alone in this regard?

No. I have vague recollections of such from my distant youth...........

I remember them well, Murph. When I was truckin', all the stops across Interstate 70 through Ohio were small buildings where each side (men/women) had two steel pipes with toilet seats on them mounted over a cement tank that could be pumped out when needed. It stunk horribly in there and there was no running water to wash up with. They are all modern facilities now with AC, and a separate building housing snack and drink machines that can even do credit cards. We've come a long way, baby!!!

Yes!thank you,Mitch! It's nice to know it wasn't all some sort of false memory from a far too distant childhood. I remember such smelly (esp. breath-taking in the summer) caves from my teenage years and a bit beyond that. And Rt.70 would have been a route familiar to me from as far back as the mid-late 60's.

I remember the restrooms at the Ohio Roadside Parks quite well.
However I do NOT remember them along the interstate highways.
As sections of the new roads were opened so were the rest areas.
I 70 was parallel to US 40 which was 2, 3, and 4 lane,was very
heavily traveled and had a lot of roadside parks. In fact they
could be found all over Ohio. I was last in Ohio in the summer of
2014 for a short time and ones that were in southeastern Ohio
are still there but have been modernized and didn't smell as bad.
Many people actually picnicked at those parks.
