And here I was really hoping that you'd buy the giant beaver scenario if only so that you could point and actually say out loud, "Nice beaver!"

Getting back to the dam for a moment, the original appears to be about 2 feet high. The hydraulic head thus produced would be grossly inadequate for any productive work.

Looking at a modern day picture of the town there is a stone rubble dam just north of the main street bridge that I measure at about 3 feet high. Again, unusable for power production. My theory is the water behind the dam could have been used for the harvesting of ice during the winter, fire protection, maybe municipal water supply but definitely for winter ice skating and summer skinny dipping (at night). For some reason the city fathers have determined there is a continuing need for a dam at this location.

Wow. Impressive. And so many awnings! I'd never have presumed to model that many on one street - now, I know differently.
Thanx!

Rufus,
Is that a stereo shot of that scene?
I remember that most business places in the downtown area of my hometown had awnings as did the corner grocery stores throughout town.
The downtown area seemed to have several designated awning rollers.

My hometown was like that also. When the streetcar line was put in there was plenty of room down the middle of the street for tracks and traffic on either side was not affected. Also no trees down town except in the city park block. I always thought my hometown had some odd stuff. The southern and western areas of town had no trees along the streets but the northern areas had the tree lined streets as seen in many of the pictures you have posted. There might be an occasional tree in a yard but even this was rare. Of course if there was a yard it was very small. We have an acre, way too much grass to cut, that in my hometown would have eight or more houses on it.

There is a picture of that substation car in Westhaeffer's book on the history of CVRR...

Back to Westfield - somewhat different and colorized view of Main St. from a bit further away

Interesting business in the right end.

Somebody must have given the business owners a great deal on the awnings.
Also look at the "telephone" poles on the left side of the street.
