I before E except after C.

We feign agreeing, but this foreign poltergeist of a rule is neither efficient nor smart- and therein lies the height of the issue.
It's as if an ancient deity has deigned to influence the zeitgeist of the people. We must remove the weight of this veil from
their eyes, and forfeit the obeisance of this weird and heinous rule from our science and leisure alike.

OK... I before E except after C and sometimes W or sounds like AY.

Clever and cute, and been around for several years. Probably created by an English teacher with too much available downtime

So many languages have been absorbed into American English that at times we are speaking a "foreign" language , of which any number of us are unaware. Here are a few examples:
Bouquet
Restaurant
Maître d'hôtel
Pizza (saying "pizza pie" is an error, technically)
Coupe de ville
Bravo / brava
Aficionado
Matador
Presto
Soprano
Blasé
Chic
Debonair
Naive
Nonchalant
Bourgeoisie
Connoisseur
Debutante
Elite
Finesse
Cliche'
Brochure
Valet

...to mention just a very few.

So, a few quirky rules about vowels shouldn't be a surprise or irritating, actually.

...and...there are some rules upon which, once they are appreciated and learned , can assist in acquisition of new words that we meet and can decide more readily, perhaps even easily (Wayne, you asked me for something like this some time ago) :
From the Latin language:
When you see.....it's always going to mean:
The root, rupt...is always going to mean: break/ burst
The root, cide...is always going to indicate: killing
The root, viv...live/alive

Here are more roots. I'll let you discern their dependable meaning when they appear in English words:
Fract
Omni
Flect
Cred
Inter
Intra
Extra
Retro
Semi
Trans

...and don't even get me started about parts of words in English from the Greeks!!!
However , here's a little free hint:
Take the Greek, bio and add it to the Greek, logy , and the result is another word ...... meaning...(?) ...... :D no need to look it up . The total meaning of the combined word is immediately apparent . Learn all the Greek and Latin roots used in English , and we have a window into innumerable new words we might meet by happenstance .

And this is why taking a few years of Latin in school has value.........
