I'm sorry, but woman power has gone over the top. I was all for equal rights back in the day, but this isn't equal anymore.

I hear that a lot and feel it can't be handled objectively.

That might be the underlying basis of the problem. There is considerable objection to and unwillingness being totally objective.

Fortunately, I never had to even think about this detail when I was hiring - salaries were set by formula based solely on years experience and then there bonus amounts added to that dependent on degree areas. I merely had to pick the right people. That was the real challenge. But as long as the person had the right experience and willingness to work independently, or close to it, it was exceptionally rare that I went wrong.

Yes, hiring the right people is taxing; and employees in general are the hardest part of running a business or a department, as in your case. I came to the conclusion that "give me a person with the "right attitude" and I can teach/train them to do most jobs". This may not apply in very technical jobs, but "right attitude" means a great deal. Lot's of people to avoid for all kinds of reasons. Hiring became much harder a few decades ago when "previous job experience" became protected by law. I understand the positive reasons for this law, but it sure protected a bunch of bad apples. "Would you hire them back" became a key question and most employers would answer that.

Never really affected me; they had to line up with what I wanted and if not, bye. Only other variable was too much experience actually disqualified applicants as these were defined "training" positions. Too many years out from getting a PhD and I could not hire them. Well, took a ridiculous effort and waivers and in too many cases visa exceptions that were improbable and not worth my trouble.

There was a guy that used to sit at the entrance to the local Giant grocery. He made more money than many of us who were working. My heart goes out to they who are truly destitute, but how do you sort 'em out? This guy is, at least innovative.
