Can't really help you out there, Pete. The last foreign hub I had apart was from a Nissan several years ago, but I don't think it would be all that complicated. Just pay close attention as you remove each piece so that nothing gets away from you. If as you say that the vacuum holds the hub out of engagement and is present at all times, it could just be stuck and you might be able to free it up by hand turning the wheel. Once you get it loose keep engaging and dis-engaging the hub til it's workin' good. Could have a weak or collapsed spring in it. This sometimes happens even on manual hubs, as when the hub is turned out, the spring is compressed, and may sit there for 2 years before someone decides they need 4WD, and now it won't engage. Two hours should be more'n adequate for 1 side.

Nah, meant it the other way around. The vacuum is NOT there in 2-wheel-drive, and is 'solenoid-ed' into existence and serves to pull the hub INTO engagement ONLY when shifted into 4-wheel-drive.

But that'll do 'er.
I'm working tomorrow- I'll call NAPA about the kits Jon mentioned. They may be the way to go, rather than depending on this unbelievably "weak link" of vacuum to get the hub to engage. Otherwise, time to jack 'er up and take a peek-see. It's just that I've never looked at these before.
Never took a tractor/engine/clutch/brakes/seals/hydraulics apart before either, and I fixed that one from head to toe. A hub oughta be a piece of cake.

Make your photo post look like this, [img]Internet%20Address%20of%20Photo.jpg[/img]
Example:
I placed spaces after [img]and%20before[/img] so that the photo would not show and you could see how the code looks.
If I remove the spaces the result is... ...the handsome face of Jim the Tank Engine.

Hub-problem solution underway. Manual hub kit from NAPA, $200 for the set, arriving in the morning.

(Hopefully, it will include instructions! )

Does anybody know why those two locomotives in the first photo are nose-to-nose, and why they are sooo close like that? Are they on the way to being scrapped - one pushing the other backwards? I saw a scene similar to that w/ my father when I was 9. They were all making their way to a bright yellow-orange light in the distance of a very large "yard" (?)

The Streamlined engine in the background looks like a Canadian National U4a. I'm not sure about the fore ground engine.
