Looks that way, doesn't it? Then again, the guy who invented tetraethyl lead drank the stuff once to prove how safe it was......

Interesting how the two larger doorways were sealed by building a stone wall in them. I would have thought that wood would have been much cheaper and quicker.

Wondered about that, too....

Maybe parts of an older building that was "updated" to clapboard and had to keep those parts as maybe structural to the rolling mill?

Still a nice photo that would serve to make a decent model if only as a false front background structure.

Perhaps the brick section is some type of oven, that would explain the chimney above the right side of it.

My knowledge of grist mills is admittedly limited but I cannot think of an instance where a large oven would be used. Most grist mills I have seen used large rotating grindstones and maybe later on metal grinders. This mill certainly has a steam boiler in the low addition and most likely a small horizontal steam engine. I also suspect that a system of overhead lineshafts drove all the machinery in the mill, including quite a few bucket elevators for the raw and ground grain. Too bad it is no longer in existence?

There is/was a water driven grist mill at Clifton, Ohio that was a rather unique attraction for that area.
All that Tony describes above is there except a steam engine. When I was in that area in the 1960s a
person could walk all through the building and see the workings. No guided tour but one was available
on weekends. They probably had to close those machine areas off from the public because of liability
and insurance. A retail store was in operation also. the last time I was there was in the 1970s. I had
to get some cornmeal for my wife. She thought it was the best.
The mill was next to an area called Clifton Gorge that was also rather unique being in the flat lands of
western Ohio. I'd bet that Murph visited the mill and the gorge as he went to college a short distance
away. He probably has some wild stories of his feats at the GORGE.
