The worst beating I got from The Old Man was when I swiped some cigarettes from him...I think I was around eleven or twelve at the time and I didn't understand what cigarettes meant to him, lol.

I took some hellacious (sic) beatings in Catholic grade school, but I don't remember the details of most of those due to the head trauma. I do remember Sister Theonilla led with her left, but had a devastating right hand, and Sister Helen, the principal, handled a metre stick like a ninja (she was well into her eighties yet could run me down with ease trying to escape down the hallway).

My own children - never laid a hand on them, never had reason to. Lead by example...it works.

Sounds simple enough, yet it also seems surprisingly elusive...
As the literacy rate declines, you’ll ask yourself why the quality of life continues to deteriorate in ways large and small, and in almost every instance the answer will be: because people stopped reading.

Not very elusive. The majority of examples are horrible.

I can distinctly remember telling my daughter that if she wanted to act like a jack@ss, have at it. However, don't look for me to (a) fund it and (b) back you up. That and the withering stare from her mother seemed to steer her back on mission.

The boy never really tested me. He got stellar grades, was a Maryland State Merit Scholar, went on to Renssalaer where he studied nuclear engineering (because the other engineering regimens were too easy), and now works at a DOE/Navy lab holed up in upstate New York.

God knows what he's doing...

From that account, you should write a book on parenting. How would you describe what the essential elements to your technique were? You must feel very satisfied - no, make that victorious.

Holey-moley! (Mouth hanging open..)...This man knows how to impress! Every nano-inch of that entire vignette is an inspiration. It shows what can be done with the right eye and the right control.
Cool. 8)

I think I give myself too much credit. The wife, being a former school teacher, probably stomped the tar out of them when I wasn't around, which was unfortunately quite frequent. We were certainly lucky, and that can't be discounted. All I can say is "ownership" was big around our house. If you act like a knuckle-head, then you get treated like a knuckle-head, and it's up to you to fix it, nobody else. They seemed to get that concept early on and acted accordingly.

John, that is some seriously nice-looking hardware. The track-work is brilliant.

A fellow collector I got to know over a few years headed home this weekend. I first met him at the meet held every year a few days before Christmas at the Arbutus fire-hall. He was a riot...a dynamo on two legs, even when he was in his Eighties. He was also a machinist, something that's getting kinda rare around these parts. He and The Old Man grew up in Arbutus and attended Catonsville High School at the same time, although Bill was a couple years older. He'll be missed.

A sad little thing for you Healey, I have a friend like that. I'm sure we could both write a better notice of passing (can't think of the right word!). I'm sure he would have appreciated your action in putting that up here where it belongs. Mike
