Tramp and Sarge, I think I found the books and pictures that should be relevant to what's needed. Not sure how many photos I'm allowed to post in a day but here goes. Sarge, if I'm overlooking anything give me a ring and I'll take some more pic's. Also, my scanner is down so I hope photo's from my Iphone will get you what you need. Sorry.

I knew about the B&A ones, too. Hundman did the A1c drawings too; used both to build B&A's. I'll see if I have a photo of the A1c somewhere, a vastly different looking Berk than the A1a and A1b. Thanks for them, though, lots of pleasant hours spent building them.

Trying to figure out the best way to reduce the gap between the tender trucks and frame is going to be tricky. If you lower the tender shell it won't match up the the cab roof. So.... I just say run that nice looking engine as is and have fun. Life is to short. Lee did a superb job and it was money well spent. 
Tramp, are you going to have Lee weather the J3a also? I would love to see that project in the future!!!

Yes, mostly LPs; they get a warp and that interferes with good tracking. If the warp is large enough then it can be audibly discerned; so between the books it goes and a weight placed on top of the book. 45s can use the same treatment, too.

Man, I love seeing the results of the weathering exercise, but I should would like to see a walk-through of the process. I realize that for Lee it's probably proprietary, i.e. trade secrets, but just some hints would be great. Presumably there are books/articles on locomotive weathering out there...if so, where might one find them?
I made a comment earlier that the western terminus of the B&M was at Troy, NY, but then began doubting that statement. However, found this system map of the B&M for 1942 that roughly confirms:

No heat needed? I found a box of 200 LPs curbside. All of them heavy metal bang your head crap. You know the guys with makeup long hair and tight leather jeans. They would each bring $100 + on Ebay if they were flat. I was thinking of using 2 pieces of butcher block. to cure them

Jon, fantastic stuff! I agree with the tender top being as important as the bottom. Made this before I read your post:
Lee did fix one truck as being too high. The plate between tender and loco is also important. I'll see when the engine gets home on Monday.
Next Lee Turner project was decided by Daisy and Lee: EM-1. He has already weathered a super Hudson. Want to see a photo?
Sarge, I'm still a bit confused on the rod difference. Sorry. The art me predominates the engineering me. Visually, what is the difference? Can you show it with two photos?
Healey, I did give a Lee Turner progression here in the Jungle. If you Google Lee Turner weathering, there are others. The thing about weathering is that most I've seen ruins the model. Lee is the rare exception. Of course it took him 20 years to perfect the skill. That's why I didn't attempt it myself. One thing I know is that he takes the engine completely apart. He also runs it. Many secrets are way beyond the amateur.
Who says we don't talk model railroading on the Jungle!
Flat records can easily be achieved with two panes of clean glass and a low temp oven.
As an aside, I found something on the Internet last night that stunned me. This was from a PDF magazine scanned from 1979:
